Durban - The Host City

Background

DURBAN “THE FRIENDLY CITY”

Durban, a coastal city in eastern South Africa’s Kwa Zulu – Natal province, is known for its African, Indian, and colonial influences. South Africa’s second-largest city, Durban, ripples with vibrancy and is the country’s top business and events destination. Home to the busiest and largest shipping port in Africa and a strong manufacturing industry, Durban is big on business. Combined with its growth as a popular domestic and international tourist destination, Durban has developed an excellent business infrastructure. With mild winters, hot summers, and golden beaches stretching as far as the eye can see, the city is a melting pot overflowing with cultural diversity, sunshine, and scenic beauty.

Economic Overview

Its privileged location on the eastern seaboard gives the city a sub-tropical climate, with an average of 320 sunny days a year, making the city an obvious choice for conference and event planners. In May 2015, Durban was officially recognised as one of the New 7 Wonders Cities. Durban was one of the host cities for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Durban is also the only UNESCO City of Literature in South Africa. Renowned for its people being as warm and friendly as the climate, Durban is South Africa’s iconic Indian Ocean beach city, offering majestic scenery as well as leading infrastructure. With a large and convenient facility package, including 3600 hotel rooms within walking distance of the award-winning Durban International Convention Centre, the city is where Africa and the world meet. The Zulu Kingdom or the Province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has a resounding track record when it comes to hosting top local and international events. These are just some of the reasons why KwaZulu-Natal remains a firm leader in the South African business events space. Nowhere else will you find such a unique fusion of raw natural beauty, modern sophistication, cultural diversity, and pulsating energy – all in the most breathtaking natural setting.

SOUTH AFRICA’S ‘PLAYGROUND’

Also known as ‘Surf City’ , Durban is renowned for its magnificent bathing and surfing beaches, which stretch along the city’s beachfront from Durban harbour in the south to the upmarket suburb of Umhlanga in the north. An expansive paved promenade offers access to the best of these beaches – the Golden Mile – where joggers, cyclists, dog owners, surfers, bodyboarders, and walkers enjoy early-morning and late-afternoon exercise. Visitors cannot miss Durban’s striking Moses Mabhida Stadium, the host venue to top-notch sporting events, Segway tours, a city-viewing SkyCar, and bungee swing. Closer to the harbour, uShaka Marine World, a worldclass water park, aquarium, and restaurant complex overlooks the ocean and offers hours of entertainment for the whole family.
